A hotfix for this issue was released on 11 Aug-06:

Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 unexpectedly exits after you install the
918899 update:

You don't. You need to contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain
the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services
telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following
Microsoft Web site: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support

Note: In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support
calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a
specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will
apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the
specific update in question.

JUST RIDICULOUS!

Can you please tell me if there are any plans to release a fix to this in
the immediate future?

I find it hard to believe that there are this many people having the same
exact problem for the same exact reason (and, for the record BOTH of my
computers are having this problem and BOTH were updated automatically) and
Microsoft refuses to release an update without requiring us to make a phone
call!

OUTRAGEOUS!

Firefox here I come.
