Do other streams work?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940029
may be the fix you're looking for.

Carlsbad California is a pretty cool place.

Did you try the article as suggested? *Your* symptoms can also be a
byproduct of this problem. Since the player automatically recreates the
WMSDKNS XML file, it'd probably be very wise to try this. Reinstalling the
player, which is not an option, would not have touched that file anyways as
it's local user setting (and the system installer generally functions
exclusively on an per-machine basis, never per-user).

As administrator? If you didn't get an elevation prompt or weren't
elevated, I wouldn't expect that to work.

Deleted what? Method 3 from that article would probably be the most
relevant.

That's just my .signature file and has no direct relation to your problems.

Yeah: it's already part of Windows Vista SP1, so you don't need it. =)

What happens if instead of going through WM11 you directly go to
http://windowsmedia.com and try to access that same stream? That may
produce a different / more useful error.

IE8 is beta (test) software. Don't expect it to work. Wait until IE8 is
officially released.

As Tyro obliquely suggested: if you roll back to IE7, does this work?

That particular ASX uses semi-corrupt XML (mixing case on two tags) and is
also less interesting if it really requires a log-in. The fewer distracting
factors, the better. =\
