Give details for a specific example?
The answer would depend on whether the example is a critical update
or not. E.g. in that case you could use AU in its prompt mode to wait
for the prompt to install the update and then disconnect from the Internet
and shutdown *all* other apps including your security apps (e.g. AV
scanner). Then allow the update and see if your symptoms change.
In any case you could manually download an update and install it,
completely independently of WU. Again, you would have the
opportunity to safely disable all potentially interfering applications.
