This behavior is strong indication that your computer is not
virus/malware-free. Go through these general malware removal steps
systematically -

I would disagree. FFox is known to leave a process behind that you
can't kill in many cases. Google it for more info.

It would not surprise me at all the Realplayer leaves a running core.
That company is not exactly known for their "good behavior" with
software.

To the OP: Do you have Realplayer starting up in you startup config -
or perhaps a better question, do you know how to check what starts up
on your system via the registry or other methods? If so, remove
realplayer. At least then it will only hit you when you use it. You
can go look for a solution to their issue. If you don't know how to
check the startup programs, post and someone can give you some help.

Almost every program you install these days thinks it's so important
that it has to start up when you log on or with windows itself. After
installing anything I always check the startup areas to see if it's
there.

Have you gone into msconfig and uncheck the programs that you do not want to
start. Go Start/Run/ type msconfig enter then under the startup tab select
which program that you do or don't want to run when you boot up. Some of
these programs are not visible in the programs/startup menu

Microsoft provides some stronger tools to determine what starts when you
boot up, and to see what is running. They have explanations for their
use on the webpage.

Process Explorer:
