well obviously the webcam that records on the server itself is for the
security of the server... that is i guess if you are sitting in front of it
when you do something.

what software you can use with your webcam depends on what kind of drivers
it supplies and how compatible they are with other recording programs. I'm
surprised the camera itself doesn't come with an app that records by itself
directly, or that even triggers on motion and records a clip. not much of a
security camera without those features. of course doing work on the server
desktop itself besides just setting it up and installing software isn't a
very good idea anyway.

But, as NeilH put it: "and your server security question is?".

Yes, there is an aspect of "security" here as it applies to "servers". But
the same could be said of the locks on the door to your server room.

If the OP want the best available advice on the use of a webcam (or door
locks, for that matter), perhaps there are newsgroups for those subjects.
Most of the "server security" specialists in this newsgroup are specialists
in traditional aspects of IT security.
