Is the re-released version of MS06-042 available via Windows Update or
SUS/WSUS?

Do you only need to install it if IE is crashing?

Does the vulnerability only exist if you are using IE and go to a malicious
site?

I have several 2003 SP1 servers running IE6 SP1 that do not pickup this
re-released update when I point them to Windows Update.

Via WU/AU for those who need to apply the update.

Nope, all *IE 6 SP1* users running on Windows 2000 or XP SP1 should
apply the re-released version of KB918899/MS06-042 ASAP.

There's no re-release of KB918899 / MS06-042 for any other Windows
version but Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP1, both running IE 6 SP1.

Thanks - this clears things up significantly for me.

This gets more and more confusing. Here is a snippet from an earlier post
quoting MS, which does NOT exclude XP SP2 users:
"A new version of security update 918899 is currently in development and
will be released to all Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1
customers by August 22, 2006. The new update will be available on the
Microsoft Download Center and by using Windows Update.
Customers who are using any version of Internet Explorer other than Internet
Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 together with any Windows version are not affected
by this release and do not have to take any action."

??? What is that supposed to mean? I use Windows Media Center or XP
SP2. I use Firefox. And I get my updates through shavlik.com now,
and avoid the WU hassle altogether. Do I have to apply this dangerous
patch?

Since you're relying on Shavlik for your updates now, why are you asking here and not http://www.shavlik.com/support/default.aspx?

Windows XP SP2 = "IE 6 SP2". Still doubting?

| To be clear, this issue does not impact other versions of Internet Explorer,
| such as Internet Explorer on Windows XP SP2 or Internet Explorer on Windows
| Server 2003 or Windows Server 2003 SP1.

You're neot effected by the *re*release of KB918899, but you should
install KB918899 for Internet Explorer on Windows XP SP2.
