My prior suggestion is still valid since anyone wishing to ensure content will remain available regardless of any other planned or unplanned condition
- archive to storage folders or elsewhere on your hard drive(ie.. copy and copy regularly)
Here's what has happened with the closure or other newsgroups(on this server) that have preceded closure of this group's eventual closure.
0. Messages will be retained on your hard drive as *.nws files in the respective Windows Explorer folder(server name and newsgroup subfolder). The server name is the name that you gave to the server when creating or importing the iaf file(to see yours rt click the server, not newsgroup and select properties)
What will actually delete downloaded messages saved as *.nws files on your computer ?
1. User deleting the folder and/or messages via Windows Explorer
2. Removing the news server account in the Accounts options or right clicking the server name and selecting Remove
3. Resetting the news group
4. Clicking Cleanup Now on the OptionsAdvanced tab(cleans out previous download news messages)
What apparently will not delete downloaded messages
5. Unsubscribing to a newsgroup
6. Newsgroup closure
The above is based on a newsgroup disappearing from the server, not the server disappearing entirely.
Which raises a few questions..
a. What happens to the server account in WLM if the server is not present
b. Does WLM react differently when a server is not available vs. when a server is not accessible.
We do know that when a server is not accessible, WLM doesn't delete any downloaded stored messages present in its hard drive message store..it can't sync and it doesn't reindex and wipe everything out, if it did, one would have to download everything anew..... thus the inference that its like syncing IMAP doesn't appear necessarily true. In the same token, WLM doesn't delete downloaded stored messages for a Hotmail account(setup as DeltaSync) when the server is not accessible.
If one temporarily changes a news server name(e.g. add an extra letter)...the server and groups can't be accessed but previously downloaded messages are not deleted. Thus if the server is no longer available it may not be any different that when a server is not available or no longer present.
I'm willing to entertain any comments on why any of the above would be different.
Separately....a lot of folks have expressed or suggested going to alternative nntp servers that carry this group(e.g. aioe.org, eternal.september etc)...maybe a previously relatively active group on this server is an example of the future. That group being the Windows Live Messenger newsgroup...fyi..since closure, aioe.org yields about 2 dozen messages since the groups closure circa July 1. I.e. alternative servers may exist, but a significant drop off of all prior readers is a real and valid possibility. In the same vein the Windows Live PhotoGallery group is also present on aioe.org and yields 'zero' posts.
What does all the above mean once this server and group are no longer available..
- if you have any desire to not lose any previously download messages ***do not perform steps 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 as noted above!
- in advance of group closure....copy/archive and copy/archive regularly without hesitation to your WLM Storage folders and/or other location on your hard drive!

I guess that is what I have done in the past when NGs were being discontinued, but I
thought whatever was already downloaded remained... I guess not.

They better not... what I download to my computer is mine. My downloaded emails are mine,
my downloaded newsgroup posts are mine.... none are MS's.

Did you know?
WLM will automagically delete all downloaded messages as soon as the NG
disappears from the server.
Back up messages you'd like to save.
