Greetings,

Are you sure you reinstalled the latest 8.5? They're not forcing updates on 8.5.

You can get the latest 8.5 by running this Microsoft Installer file:
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/redir/wlm85.asp

If you're still having a problem, which Windows version are you using?

Hi,

It's possible to have both 8.1 and 2009 installed, although the installers won't generally
cause this scenario to occur as they should uninstall the previous version prior to
installing the next.

All the old versions on XP will notify you of a new version, but they shouldn't force you to
install it. There's no way to prevent the message from appearing.

I have to admit I'm a big confused now where you are with this problem, so if you could
restate if you're being forced to update or what the problem is now that would be great.

8.5 is a tad different than 8.1, but does contain some connectivity (for UPnP on router)
fixes.

Hi,

What exactly happens when you try to re-create them (in 8.1)? They should still be
functional.

I had the same problem with Messenger 2009. I ran a program called windows
install cleanup (msicuu.exe). Completely removed ALL of the Windows live
messenger items. Rebooted and reload an older version of Messenger. This
worked for me, I hope it will work for you.
