The failed installation attempts for KB927978 has most likely created
numerous randomly named folders on the C:\ drive (or, in some cases, the
drive with the most free space). Each one contains a log for the failed
installation. You can delete them *all*.

Open Add/Remove Programs. Is MSXML 4.0 SP2 {KB927978) listed ?
If so, uninstall it and then reboot.
Under Windows XP - Software Updates, is KB925672 listed ?
If so, uninstall it and then reboot.

If at anytime you are prompted that either of those updates are
available, click on the Update notification icon, and UNcheck the box
next to it, then click OK
A window should appear. Check the box next to 'Do not notify me of this
update again'. Click OK.

Now download KB927978 from here and save it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
( KB927978 supercedes KB925672 )

If you've done any printing, suggest you restart the system prior to
installing the update.
Otherwise, close the browser and *any other open programs*.
Now install msxml4-KB927978-enu.exe
Reboot.

Did that get it installed ?

Thanks a billion. Those random files in the root directory were starting to
make me think bad thoughts about who/what was running my system. Awesome and
concise help.

That's good to hear. Nice work 'group'.
Glad the update is now installed properly.

Bob,

Let's be sure that it is installed. Check in Add/Remove Programs for
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978).

Did the prompt to install the update show up before you installed it and
did you UNcheck it, then choose to not be notified about it again, or,
was it finally just installed properly and no prompt to install happened
during it's installation ?

I'd hate to be telling folks to hide that update if it did not install
properly. There is active exploitation of the vulnerability that the
update was intended to mitigate occurring, which is why I'm asking for
confirmation. <whew, that's one long sentence>

Are you being serious ? Click Start > Turn off Computer > Restart
Or, choose Shutdown and then unplug the system.
Wait 10 years and then plug it in again.

There will be an msxml4 log file in each randomly named folder that is
generated for every attempted installation of KB927978.
Find the latest randomly named folder and post the END of that log,
please. It should contain an error code or reference a subkey in the
registry from whence the Windows installer error is emanating from.

OR, open the Event Viewer by going to Start > Run > type in

eventvwr.msc
Click OK

Click on Application in the left frame and look for Errors in the right
frame. Look for Errors with the Source being MsiInstaller.
There should be a few MsiInstaller entries in a row. Double click on
them to bring up the specific entry. IF one of them contains an error
code or points to a registry setting that is denying the installation,
then click the file icon right under the up and down arrows to copy it
to the clipboard.
Post it in your next reply, please.
