Its not a "hack" . Its a very easy procedure to perform. It does NOT
require any sophisticated user skills. It will NOT result in the user
screwing up his or her computer. Please do not make such blanket statements
and discourage users by telling them they are too stupid to do it. That is
not the case.

I never insinuated anyone was stupid !! I just don't understand the logic
of making a recommendation such as that if the user is not able to figure
out how to keep someone's e-address from being labeled a phish. They knew
what to do - just not where to do it. Setting up and running a virtual
machine just adds a layer of unnecessary confusion to what is supposed to be
a simple procedure, sending and receiving email. My elderly mother has a
fit because she has to logon !! She just wants to "turn the thing on and
use it", without jumping through hoops. Some things that may be easy for
you, are not to others.

Just for the record, I was not knocking your obvious and well documented
abilities.

It may not be a true 'hack', but it is something that the average user
would find complicated. The concept of one OS running inside
another one is difficult to comprehend by someone who hardly
knows what an OS is or does.
Aside from conceptual difficulty, there is the issue of obtaining
a retail copy of Windows XP.

So what makes it different from any other Windows program? The "average
user" finds those complicated as well, so what's the difference. How hard
can it be to copy your OS from one computer, then run it in a window on
another computer? Do you really consider people so ignorant that they
cannot figure that out????

No wonder people don't complain about Walmail, given such a mindset.

current with technology. Maybe his sense of humor is more advanced than
yours then - maybe, it was just his opportunity to call you a "phish",
BoaterDave! If the shoe fits . . . . (he probably didn't really need your
help at all !!!) LOLOLOL !!!

(Current year - almost )2010 - (mid 50's)1955 = 55 years + 25 yo
(*assuming* a "young" age at the time of employment in this field) = 80 yo
today . . . . . . . I suppose he could have been 20 yo, or maybe he got in
the field in the early 60's - either scenario only varies the age by 5-10
years . . . . FYI, anything younger than 70 is not elderly !! (The older
you get, the older "old / elderly" gets !!! LOLOL !! One of my nursing
texts labels 60 - 74 as "young-old", 75 - 84 is "middle-old", and >85 is
"old-old". (Fundamentals of Nursing, The Art and Science of Nursing Care,
6th Ed., pg. 450) There are nearly 40 million older Americans today and
that will double by 2030 (just Americans - not counting the world
population), which is why technology needs to be considerate of this
population in their development efforts (KIS). These folks have been
through A LOT of change, more so than probably any other generation ever has
or will. I can only hope to keep up at that age !!

I took my first computer class in the early 80's. They were still teaching
about the earliest computers and tubes at that time . . . . don't know if
they still teach about that today - other than a fleeting mention.

Your elderly friend sounds like he is not afraid of a challenge, so
go for it!
