Greetings Bert,

Messenger has two different modes of operation -- TCP mode (which is connections on port
1863) and HTTP mode (which is connections on port 80, like standard web traffic).

For TCP mode, Messenger can use a SOCKS proxy. You can set that by opening up the main
Messenger window, pressing the Alt key on the keyboard, choosing the Tools menu, then
Options, then Connection on the side, and then Advanced Settings.

For HTTP mode, Messenger will use any HTTP proxy that's set in Internet Explorer and you have
to set it there.

Just a quite note about authentication, Messenger will require port 443 (HTTPS) outgoing to
authenticate you to the service. Both proxy methods support that.

Is it possible to use a diifferent proxy than that set in IE?
I need to use our corporate proxy server that has filtering on it for
everyday browsing. This proxy blocks messenger. I have an unfiltered proxy
that I would like Messenger to use.

Hi Jonathan,

I have read up couple of write up about this topic of authenicated Live
Messenger thru Proxy server. currently i am using ISA 2006 and having some
diffcuities.
From the ISA logs, it shows that messenger is connecting without providing
the ceridentsial i have input into the messenger advanced option page. My
proxy is configured to only allow user from a certain AD group to connect to
messenger.
Please share your views on this.

Hi,

Not exactly. You can write up a batch file or something similar to set the IE proxy (via the
registry or WinInet interfaces), start Messenger so it uses them, and then sets the IE proxy
back. Additionally you could do this manually yourself (turn off in IE, start messenger,
turn on in IE).
