Like many others my XP SP3 udate failed with the "Access denied" error. I
realise now that I had not closed everything down and my anti-virus may have
been denying access to the registry. How can I simply re-run the update from
within windows update. Its sitting in there as a failed update but there's no
option to try again.

Did you try a manual scan?

You are not offered the option to install Windows XP Service Pack 3 when you
use the Windows Update Web site or Automatic Updates
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955307

Otherwise see PA Bear's posting. You may still have an access denied problem.
