In my case I got the update to install and not come back by temporarily
disabling my antivirus software (Symantec 10.1 Corp Ed).

Yes. Auto-Update is now turned on and KB927978 has not returned.

See "KB927978 Permissions error" thread. I felt the same way as you --but
deleting all the .4.0 registry keys worked for me.
