Re: SBS 2003 won't restart after recent Hotfix updates

There is an issue with KB908531 conflicting with some HP software (share to
web) that will mess up the Windows Explorer but the box should still be
booting fine. There is also an issue with Sunbelt Personal Firewall, but
again, the box should still boot.

Did anything else change? Did you give Dell a call to see if there is a
conflict with any of their drivers?

Thanks for this Claus,

As far as I'm aware and from what I can read in the event log nothing has
changed. The server has been working away without problem for several
months then last Thursday it download the Hotfixes which forced an automatic
reboot. Then it hung or crashed in the initial start-up phase.

As there is no System restore in SBS 2003 or even System File Checker (SFC)
in Safe Mode, I can't easily check or put back the system into a previous
state. I've removed the Hotfixes.

If I log the start-up I get thousands of pages of "Did not load driver
AFD.SYS". This appears to be part of the TCP/IP protocol, the file is there
in C:\Windows\system32\drivers and appears to be correct and intact.

I suppose the problem is a wider one, how do I repair I broken SBS 2003?
What other tools are available to check the integrity of the operating
system?

For what it is worth, I managed to perform a "repair re-install" or SBS 2003
which enabled the server to boot again correctly. Apart for a few minor
problems, such as WINS service failing with " Cannot find specified file"
(which wasn't specified and who needs WINS anyway), I was able to get the
server back into production today.

I'm poorly disappointed with Microsoft's recovery tools for what is a key
piece of infrastructure software and also its support procedures.
