I had the same symptoms one day suddenly in the morning, when the client
reported they are not getting emails since the morning, rdp to server 2008
said welcome screen after the login credentials even after half an hour, ran
onsite and even on the console same symptoms. Had to hard power boot the
system then go into last know good configuration, go into the safe mode and
complete uninstall the Trend Micro Worry Free 6.0 Advanced from the server,
on reboot the server has been just fine. I had suspected the Trend Micro to
be the issue as I had been fighting some issues with Trend Micro Worry Free.

In the case I attended to, the issue reported to me was no emails since today
morning at about 10am, I know that the network shares worked just fine and
the staff kept doing thier work accessing network shares as when I reached
onsite, I asked them to saved their work before I attempted pull the power
plug. It only happened once so far in the 4 weeks that this new sbs 2008
server has been in opearation. What antivirus program are you using?
