I had this same problem with my f572us with Windows XP (and with
Linux).

I found the answer on the HP troubleshooting pages:
'LCD Remains Blank or Displays an Error Code 83 When Resuming From
Hibernation/Sleep Mode*' (http://tinyurl.com/6gaaov)

Basically all you need to do us update your bios. I downloaded and ran
their flashing utility and that seems to have solved the problem.
