Hello,

Thanks for your post.

Have you followed the official Windows Small Business Server 2008 Premium Installation Guide to install and configure the second Windows 2008 server? What's the error
message you encountered then?

Please follow the steps in below article to join the second server to SBS 2008 domain:

Adding a Server Running Windows Server 2008 to a Windows Small Business Server 2003 Network
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...31(WS.10).aspx

If the issue persists or other error occurs during the installation, please check the following two log files for more information:

C:\Program Files\Windows Small Business Server\Logs
DCPromo_yymmdd.xxxxxx.log ---- DCPromo that ran during SBS install
FinishSetup.log ---- Logs the completion of the SBS 2008 install
Please note that you will also find Event logs on the new server for more clues.

More information for your reference:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...04(WS.10).aspx

Hope this helps. Also, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Is the SBS a child in the hyperV or has the hyperV role?

SBS can't have Hyperv role.

SBS has to be the PDC and hold all of the FSMO roles. It has to hold
the domain.

Hi,

Thanks for your update and glad to know the second server has joined the domain. You are welcome.

Personally, regarding deploying SBS 2008 in Hyper-V environment, there are different scenarios based on your needs. I recommend you refer to the blow articles for
reference which discusses scenarios in which Windows SBS 2008 supports the Hyper-V technology:

SBS 2008 and Virtualization
http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive...alization.aspx

"Using Hyper-V with Windows Small Business Server 2008" Documentation Released
http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive...-released.aspx

Known Issues with Running Windows Small Business Server 2008 in a Hyper-V Environment
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l...04(WS.10).aspx

However, if you need further assistance on the new Hyper-V issue, I would like to explain that generally, we answer one question per thread in the newsgroups. In order to
concentrate fully on each of these problems we ask that you post them as separate threads. That way each issue can receive full attention from the MVPs and Communities
as well as Support Professional. This will also make the thread more clear and consistent for everyone's reference. Please feel free to submit a new thread for the new
Hyper-V question. We will be very glad to work with you. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Hi,

Yes, first make sure you manually set SBS server's IP , Subnet, Default Gateway(router's IP) and point itself as DNS server and DHCP server. For all client computers, you may
enable DHCP and automatically assign IP and DNS server. Then the client should get a IP from DHCP server which is assigned by SBS server and point to SBS as DNS
server. However, you must make sure the client Virtual machines and the SBS virtual machine are in the same virtual subnet. You can verify the Hyper-V settings at: File ->
Settings -> Network Adapter -> Network dropdown list, please check and make sure all SBS server and clients are use the same network.

If the issue persist, please try to manually set the DNS server as SBS server on the client IP properties to see if it changes.

Thanks for your time.

Hi,

Glad to know the client joined domain after we configured its DNS settings. Please refer to the following articles why DHCP service is recommended running on the SBS
server instead of on the router or other server:

Why You Should Run DHCP On Your SBS 2008
http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive...-sbs-2008.aspx

More related information:

When Hyper-V is installed in SBS 2008 it causes the bindings for DHCP to bind to the incorrect interface
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958829

You cannot assign IP addresses to your client machines using DHCP after you install Hyper-V
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/968250

Hope this helps.
