A quick Scroogle shows that NNTP Server software for Windows is a
fairly rare beast.

There are a number of implementations that have fallen by the wayside,
and the links that I can find all lead to dead ends.

The only offering I found that's still live is this:
http://www.messagepixels.com/

A presumed obsolete one that I found that's at least still available
(and has source) is this:
http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d7xananewz2.htm

Of course, the other pertinent question is what you'd want to run your
own NNTP Server for?

Then you should be looking at the Message Pixels offering.

Brian there is a NNTP Service in SBS2003 (if my memory serves me)
However

IMO since NNTP is dying, Most ISP's do not offer NNTP service and even this
group is dying.
I suggest just going to a web based forum.

I know even I don't like to see NNTP dying for the masses.
*Yes there will still be NNTP servers out there, but Kids don't like NNTP

I've been running a http://www.transalp.org forum off of
http://www.phpbb.com/ and have been really happy with it.
(Easier to ban spammers, and track threads etc etc.)

Most web hosting, that is cPanel has Fantastico, and you can click to
install PHPBB in 4 seconds

Check it out
Russ
PS if this is a non Profit group Let me Know and I'll host for you for free.

The claim that NNTP is dying has been going on for decades, and it's not
true - just like TCP it will last for ages past the time that microsoft
igores it.

Web groups are cumbersome, slow, and don't have consistent user
interfaces across them.

The reason that anyone setting up a NNTP server will have problems is
that there are no free peers - meaning you can't just setup a news
server an peer with anyone else for free.

Short of selling Usenet subscriptions I can't think of any Small
Business need for a usenet server - share point works better for what
small businesses need in relation to anyone using SBS.

This is the only group out of about thirty I currently use which is
dying, and you know very well it's not through lack of use, or lack of kids.

Most of the rest of the IT world finds NNTP useful.

IMO PHPBB is probably the easiest to set up (I've set them up even the
manual way.)

There are plugins that you can put in that someone has to enter a specific
WORD to register an account etc.
this way BOTS don't register them self and spam..

Best of luck
Russ

Thanks Russ. Unfortunatly I turned off my last 2003 server a little while
ago, and would rather not take a step back to older technology (I'd rather
go *nix). But yes, I do believe there was an NNTP service in 2003.

Sadly fewer ISPs are offering NNTP and Microsoft abandoning NNTP support
doesn't help, but I think NNPT will be around and active for a long time
yet.

Ideally I'd like to support both. Certainly a forum might be more attractive
to some, but comes a poor second compared to a newsgroup (IMHO).

PhpBB does seem to be the most popular forum software. If I go that route
(i.e. just a forum with no NNTP) then PhpBB will probably be what I use.

Thank you for the offer, but hosting is one of the few things which won't be
an issue.

We abandoned PHPBB last year because, even after massive code changes,
the bots could still register.

Brian does state that he has SBS2008, which does *not* have an NNTP
service.
