IMO PHPBB is probably the easiest to set up (I've set them up even the
manual way.)
There are plugins that you can put in that someone has to enter a specific
WORD to register an account etc.
this way BOTS don't register them self and spam..

Sadly fewer ISPs are offering NNTP and Microsoft abandoning NNTP support
doesn't help, but I think NNPT will be around and active for a long time
yet.

Ideally I'd like to support both. Certainly a forum might be more attractive
to some, but comes a poor second compared to a newsgroup (IMHO).

PhpBB does seem to be the most popular forum software. If I go that route
(i.e. just a forum with no NNTP) then PhpBB will probably be what I use.

Thank you for the offer, but hosting is one of the few things which won't be
