Since my original posting I have done a lot of testing and found that
ser2pl.sys version 2.0.2.1 seems to be the only workable solution both
on XP and on Vista. The size of this version is 48640 bytes.

This version of ser2pl.sys can be found in one of the many driver
installation
files available on www.aten.com (not the file apparently intended for
Vista!)
