On the server restarting I would look at hardware. On the XP workstation I
would compare their DNS settings to another workstation that is working
correctly. Also check to see if the firewall is on.

Recommended way to connect to a domain is VPN.

I wouldn't recommend any other way.

A Citrix session is encrypted but i'm not sure if a tunnel is created.
