Well it also depends on not just your own connectivity but what your contact has available as
well.
For instance, you may be on a luscious corporate line with 100Mbps to spare, but if you're
restricted to using the web only then a direct connection won't be established to your
contact and the transfer will be exceptionally slow.
If you aren't restricted but your contact is, it'll be the same problem.
