It's possible the emoticons have just been turned off, which can happen by just hitting the
wrong key combination (there's a hotkey for it).

You can check this by pressing the Alt key on the keyboard in any Messenger window to bring
up the menu bar, choosing the Tools menu, then Options, then Messages category, and verify
that 'Show emoticons' and 'Show custom emoticons' are turned on. Assuming you had to turn
them on, click OK and then close and re-open any active conversation windows for the change
to take affect.
