You don't say what software you're using to call people, but you may well
find it has an Audio Settings wizard that'll sort all this out for you. It
should be on the Options menu somewhere. If you can't find it you'll have
to do it manually as follows.
Assuming your microphone is plugged into the right socket, it's probably
muted. Open the Control Panel, click 'Hardware and Sound', and then click
'Sound'.
Click the Recording tab, then double-click Microphone. Click the Levels tab
and you'll find two sliders and two buttons. The first button should be a
picture of a speaker with sound coming out of it. If it's a speaker with a
No Entry symbol it's muted. Clicking it once should unmute it. If it's not
muted, you'll probably need to adjust the level using the Microphone slider.
This should be done gradually. If you turn it up too high it'll feed back
horribly with an ear-piercing screech.
