Hi Debbie,

One of the biggest problems with sp 1 failing to install at step 3
appears to be bad drivers I would recomend that you try uninstalling
drivers Graphic Sound etc and then try installing sp 1 again letting it
install these drivers by itself.

Another method that appears to work for some people is to delete all
the files in c:\windows\softwaredistribution\downloads\. Then chkdsk c:
/r after the reboot try to install sp 1 again.

Finally if all else fails and a reinstall is an option, the best method
is a reinstall of Vista with SP 1 incorporated in the DVD see this link

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/15...ation-dvd.html

Oh and I forgot, try disabling all autostart programs during the
install, anti virus etc.

I hope this helps

This is what I can't do because I don't have a install cd, microsoft support
was to send me the DVD and like I said it's 8 months now and I still haven't
received it, guess I'm not getting it. My laptop came preinstalled with
everything

You should be talking to the laptop manufacturer for the CD/DVD set.
Microsoft is not responsible for providing support on OEM installs.

Hi Debbie
Does your laptop have the microsoft certificate with the install key
This should be located on the underside
If so, you should be able to use any vista install dvd, Should you wan
to try a repair, the architecture (32 or 64 bit) must be the same a
you have installed
You can then perhaps borrow a dvd from a friend to use to make th
slipstream dvd to use with your key to reinstall vist

James the tech support wanted me to try something and I told her I couldn't
because I didn't have the install DVd and that's when she said they would
send me one.

Yes I have that certificate on the bottom and I didn't know I could use a
borrowed DVD. Now what do you mean by slipstream? I imagine I can't just
"copy" their DVd? There's a certain way to do that?
