When I try to get to the Windows Update page to pick the type of
updates.....It won't load!!!!!!!!!!! Instead, a Microsoft/Windows update page
comes up with the following message (no error)....."Thank you for your
interest in Windows Updates, To receive Windows Updates you must have a
Windows Operating System" I have XP Home/SP2. The computer runs fine. No
virus/adware/malware. The Windows Update had been working fine as early as a
week ago! I checked BITS and Windows Update services and both were in auto
and started!!!!!!!! I am wondering if there are other services that WU
depends on that I mighthave shut off? Are there any other settings I should
check? Microsoft wants me to go in and do some serious registrychanges which
I think is too risky, and unwarrented at this time! Appreciate any help I can
get!!!!!!!!!! Thanks, Bill

Follow this:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
Look for "When attempting to access the Windows Update Web site you receive
the following message: Thank You -- you must be running a Microsoft windows
operating system in order to use windows update"

Otherwise follow the Windows Update Checklist:

Hey, Jupiter Jones, thanks! I did check and the windows update is disabled
and stopped. So....I guess I need to see if I by chance I tweaked my Norton
Firewall by accident. Oher than that, what about supportive services needed
by WU, other than Background Intelligence??? I suppose I could always remove
and re-install my Norton program....Bill

I have the same problem and can not find the "key" to this solution. I also
get a message in Hotmail telling me that I am not using IE which I have been
using. Are you running XP Home Edition with SP2?
