This is a new feature in Windows Live Messenger. You can communicate with your contacts
while they are Appear Offline.

Hi Lau,

Just set your status (for example, by right-clicking on your notification area icon,
choosing Status and then Appear Offline) and then talk to your contacts as per normal.
