Dear Susan,

Perhaps you are being a little unfair in your response. This is usenet.
Unmoderated.

Anyone can (and they do as you have experienced,) post their thoughts in
response to a question. Some well meant, others not, some ill informed,
others concise accurate and helpful. Some downright rude.

It's my understanding that the MS MVP's such as Rick Rogers, ( who took the
time to answer your question,) volunteer their time and expertise. They seem
to go out of their way to provide accurate information and assistance
whenever they can.

Sometimes it pays to sort the wheat from the chaff in reading responses.

My understanding is that WD is anti spyware, not anti virus

I would think not

My approach is to leave everything turned on unless it causes obvious
conflicts.
I tend to keep everything locked down as much as possible
Been using microsoft since V3.1, so far I've never had a virus, crash or had
to do a restore.
If it aint broke ...... : )

Although I uninstalled Norton and used Kaspersky in XP, I am presently using
Norton with Vista and I'm pleasantly surprised at it's perfomance to date. A
huge improvement on the previous version from my point of view.

Others may have better informed opinions

YMMV

I don't know why this question is posted all over the place, but here is
some definitive "wheat" for you:

Yes, you do. Windows Defender is not an antivirus. Antivirus programs watch
for different types of malware than antispyware programs. My suggestion is
to protect your system with a good antivirus like NOD32, Kaspersky, or
Avast if you want a free one. If you have Vista (which you do), use Windows
Defender. If you don't have Vista (maybe you have an XP machine), my
antispyware program of choice - which I prefer to run on demand instead of
resident - is Malwarebytes Antimalware (MBAM).

No.

See my first paragraph. There really isn't anything further to add except
that all the protective programs in the world will not help unless the
computer user practices "Safe Hex". I'm not saying you don't, but these
