Hi Matt,

ActiveSync will synchronize the Contacts that are available in the main
Contact folders. None of the other sub-folders or the Contacts within them
will be synchronized. ActiveSync allows you to customize the amount of
Contacts items that can be synchronized into the PPC but this is with
respect to the Contacts available in the main folder only.

If you like to sort your Contacts, then you would need to use the Categories
feature instead of sub-folders since this feature is supported by
ActiveSync. However, the Categories must be applied to the Contacts
available in the main Contacts folder. Any contact item outside this folder
cannot be seen by ActiveSync.

ActiveSync has options for synchronizing categories in
Tasks/Calendar/Contacts. Take a look at the following links for better
understanding on how categories can be used:

http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/arti...on=expand,3142

http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/arti...on=expand,8034

Microsoft had earlier released an add-in which would create copies of the
contacts in your sub-folder into the main folder and would also append the
Categories field of these contacts, which helped sorting on your PPC. This
enabled synchronization of the Contacts stored in sub-folders. However,
this was a one way sync operation only. More information about this add-in
is available here ---

http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2002/opcs.aspx

Please note that this works with Outlook 2000 and 2002 only. Users have
reported installation problems when they tried installing it with Outlook
2003.

I hope this information helps you clear your doubts !!

Hi Raj,

Thanks so much for your reply.

One question. Can you clarify what you mean by "ActiveSync will
synchronize the Contacts that are available in the main Contact folders?"
What do you mean by "main Contact folders?" When you wrote folders in the
plural, that is what confused me. I only have one main "Contacts" folder,
and then several sub-folders underneath it. I'm assuming from your response
that only contacts in the single Contacts folder will be synchronized, right?

Thanks again,

Matt

Hello Matt,

Yes, your assumption is right- "Only contacts in the single Contacts folder
will be synchronized". I am sorry about the "folders" bit. It should have
been "main Contact folder".

I currently organize different types of contacts by using folders Ex.
Personal/vendors/customers etc. I tried using categories, but when in
category view you cannot sort by category.

Hi,

Sorry, I didn't seem to understand what you are trying to say. Are you
referring to the MS Outlook (desktop) category view or the one on PPC?

I have Activesync 4.2.0 for my Moto Q and that doesn't have any options to
sync by categories. Is there an alternative method?

you can ONLY sync ALL contacts in your Default Contacts folder. This means
that any contacts in the contact subfolders will not be synchronised to the
device. Secondly, you cannot filter the contacts by categories - everything
in default Contacts folder gets down to the device. This however gives up a
clue that you can cleverly manually filter what you want on your device by
creating a sub folder and moving contacts around so that you remain with the
mobile ones in your default contacts folder.

I've taken all of my contacts into a Contacts subfolder so it won't sync them
to my device. The only ones I want to sync are only a handful which are now
in the main Contacts folder.

The problem is, when someone sends me a vcard, I hit Save & Close, it goes
into the main contacts folder. Is there a way so that when I save the vcard,
it goes into the subfolder?

Hi Rob,

You could use the File -> Move to Folder option and specify the folder
instead of clicking Save & Close.

Hi,

To add a little further - you can create a button for "Move to Folder " on
your toolbar itself. You can refer to "Adding a Button to a Toolbar" within
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=195923
