An application is e.g. Word, Internet explorer, AOL, etc. The process
is the actual .exe that executes applications. You can have more than
one processes of an application running if you have more than one
instance of that application. E.g. if you open 3 Internet Explorer
windows at the same time, that will run 3 times the iexplore.exe. A
program .exe can also be running because it was started as part of the
startup programs - even if yo do not use it at this moment. It may be
just sitting there idle in the background - or it is active, e.g. the
windows sidebar.
