Try the opposite of P. Di Stolfo's advice? <EG>
(A solution for the opposite case--OP wanted more reliable automatic sorting.)

(web interface search of this newsgroup for
favorites registry order delete
)
So, with this information I would try using ProcMon (or ideally use
registry auditing) to find out if in fact that Order value is somehow
getting regenerated intermittently. In that case perhaps you will
have to control its update using the same type of permissions
idea that Paulo suggests, i.e., prevent the updating of that
Order value unless you specifically want it to be updated.
If you change your Favorites menu frequently that could get
inconvenient, so it would be best to find out why it is changing
automatically.
FWIW I don't have your problem but I'm not using Vista.
In case this is a Vista-only quirk I am cross-posting to Vista General.
Good luck
