Greetings Dave,
Unfortunately there is no way to fully remove a Hotmail, although you can close the mail
account, the Windows Live ID will remain until it expires on its own. Visit
http://mail.live.com/mail/CloseAccountConfirmation.aspx for the closing part.
However, before doing any of that and to answer your second question; the easiest way to move
mail from one account to another is to use the Windows Live Mail desktop application. You
can install this from here:
http://download.live.com/wlmail
While that's downloading and installing, you can make the new ID. Finally once that's done,
log into Live Mail (the application) using the new ID and once you're in, press the Alt key
on the keyboard to bring up the menu bar. Choose Tools from the menu, then choose Accounts,
and then finally click Add to create a new mail account. The mail account you should be
adding here is the old one.
Once you've done all that, you should have both the new Live ID and the old Live ID's mail
accounts in Live Mail, and you can simply drag/drop the mail items from one account to
another. Alternatively you can select them and choose Move to folder to move them also.
