I tried all on the winhelponline .com article. Did not improve. Still can't
get to the update site. I show mozilla/4.0 (compatible; msie 6.0) in the
java script. I do not have the firewall on and even when I did, I was able
to get to the Windows Update site with out any problems in the past. Still
seems like there is something being passed to the update site that makes the
site think I am NOT an XP user.

I did receive auto update notification today and was able to download and
install everything that way, but I would like to go out to the update site
and check for other than critical updates.

Any suggestions and/or additional help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Sorry that I have nothing constructive to add, but I am having this
same problem. I had accidentally deleted a Windows File needed during
startup and was told to repair the installation with my WinXP MCE
disc. The repair was successful but the older files (I had the latest
from Windows Update before) downgraded and ruined much of my system. I
had to repair .NET 2.0, I separately installed IE7 and a few other
upgrades but without access to the update site, I'm stuck with a
relatively broken, bleeding system. I've tried the above remedies,
found the keys didn't exist and the old Update software just jumped
right to v6 so here I am. If I find something I'll be sure to post but
ANY help would be appreciated, and I'm pretty sure I speak for both of
us.

(And as a note "Windows Update" is actually out of date for newer
users of as XP or Vista, but I'm pretty sure that "Microsoft Update"
and "Windows Update" remain interchangeable... lets not make it
anymore confusing. )

Initiate a manual visit to Windows Update. If the system still cannot
access it, open the WindowsUpdate.log and post the last 40 or so lines
of it into your reply, please.

Start > Run > type in [or copy&paste]

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Click OK or press Enter

Make sure internet explorer is your default browser
to set default browser
Click Start- Click Run - > type inetcpl.cpl and click ok
We will get internet options open
go to programs tab
check the option which says 'Interner Explorer Should check if it is default
browser '

then try to access windows update
----
If still having any problems
then refer 818018 kb
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/818018

----
if issue persists
then try to run the following commands from command prompt
(to open the command prompt - > start- > run - > type cmd click ok)

1) NET STOP BITS
2) NET STOP WUAUSERV
3) NET STOP CRYPTSVC
4) REN C:\WINDOWS\SOFTWAREDISTRIBUTION SD1
5) REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CatRoot2 CR2
6) NET START BITS
7) NET START WUAUSERV
8) NET START CRYPTSVC

Register the dll files :
----------------------
Go to start -> run -> cmd

1) REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL
2) REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
3) REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
4) REGSVR32 WUAUSERV.DLL
5) REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
6) REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
7) REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

Hopefully these steps will resolve the issue with updates.
Lets c, let me know the status .

I folled your instructions and I received an error on the REN:C\.... commands
so I renamed within explorer. Error came back from the run command as
cammand not found. the other error I encountered was on the regsvr32
wuauserv.dll gave me the following error:

Was loaded, but the dll register server entry point was not found. File
cannnot be registered.

Still cannot access windows update site. There are no entries in the
%windir%\windowsupdate.log except for auto updates.

Do I have a bad DLL? Can I reload Windows Update Agent? Do I have to
remove the old one first?

Thanks so much for the your help. You guys are great.

Check the windows update log. Only entries in there are automatic update
checks.

I even tried the things that Rajesh suggested. Please see my reply to him.

Thanks so much for your help and I'm still open for suggestions.
