I had a similar problem, a trojan virus was the cause. I installed spybot(
it was the only virus scan that worked for me) ran scan cleared all items.
Went to djlizard.net /software/dial-a-fix. Save the zip file to desk top,
extract it . Double click on the dial-a -fix .exe & click the tool button(
icon looks like a hammer)at the bottom right on the window. select reinstall
automatic update service. You my have to install OS cd I did not have to.
After that restart windows & try automatic update service. I got this
information from Microsoft support. e-mail
