Hi Carlos,
Thank you for posting in the SBS Newsgroup. I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please understand that the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals to answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is greatly appreciated! From your description, I understand that you get the message "The files is read-only" if you modify a shared file located in a shared folder and save it. If I have misunderstood your concern, please do not hesitate to let me know. Do you mean you have used the Attrib command at a command prompt to change the attributes of the folder? For example, to change the Read-only attribute to System for the C:\Test folder, use the following command: "attrib -r +s c:\test" (without the quotation marks) Note that some programs may not operate correctly with folders that have the System attribute set. To remove both the Read-only and System attributes from the C:\Test folder, use the following command: "attrib -r -s c:\test" (without the quotation marks) It appears that you are unable to get rid of the read-only attribute of the folder. As I know, unlike the Read-only attribute for a file, the Read-only attribute for a folder is typically ignored by Windows, Windows components and accessories, and other programs. For example, you can delete, rename, and change a folder with the Read-only attribute by using Windows Explorer. The Read-only and System attributes is only used by Windows Explorer to determine whether the folder is a special folder, such as a system folder that has its view customized by Windows (for example, My Documents, Favorites, Fonts, Downloaded Program Files), or a folder that you customized by using the "Customize" tab of the folder's "Properties" dialog box. As a result, Windows Explorer does not allow you to view or change the Read-only or System attributes of folders. Note: In some previous versions of Windows, you can change the Read-only attribute for folders by using the "Properties" dialog box for the folder, but no versions of Windows permit you to change the System attribute by using Windows Explorer. To get more detailed information regarding this behavior, you may refer to the following KB article: 326549 You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System Attribute of Folders http://support.microsoft.com/?id=326549 As I know, the following possibilities could lead this issue: 1. Did you find the "read-only" attribute on the file by right-clicking the file and clicking Properties? 2. The NTFS permissions were not properly configured. 3. The sharing permissions were not properly configured. 4. The document is opened by several users at the same time Here, I would suggest you try the following action plan: 1. Go to the SBS server. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to that shared folder. Right-click it and choose 'Properties'. In 'Security' tab, check the user and permission list. Make sure the Users group has the modify/read&excute/list folder contents/read/write permissions on the folder. 2. The shared folder access is also controlled by the sharing permission. Navigate to 'Sharing' tab, click 'Permissions' button. Assign 'Full control' permission to Users group. 3. Please also check the permission on each file. Normally, the files should inherit the folder permissions. You may click 'Advanced' button in 'Security' tab of the file properties. Navigate to 'Effective permissions' tab. Select a user and query the effective permission for the particular user. 4. We cannot open an office document from multiple users for modification at the same time. Let the users close all documents and then go to a workstation and try the access. Does the problem still occur? If the problem still persists, to narrow down the problem, would you please help me collect the following information? 1. Use the xcacls to help me collect the permission of the folder, please refer to the following KB article: 245015 How to: Print Folder and File Permissions from One Folder http://support.microsoft.com/?id=245015 2. Can you save files to these folders directly? For example: open a word document and then save to the folder. 3. Does the situation occur on every user accounts include Admin? 4. If you create a new file on the folder and then open it and modify and then save it, does the situation occur? 5. If you create a new folder on the shared drive, can the situation occur? Does the situation occur on other partition? I appreciate your time and I look forward to hearing from you. Hi Crina,
I am sorry for not responding fast enough. On the evening of the 11 I modified the permissions under the security tab and that fixed the problem. I really appreciate your detailed posting. Also it gives me the comfort of validating what I did. Thank you very much for your thorough response.
