Ivan did you backup your files, I understand your anger I got into 8hrs of
downloading this, quite and now I have been informed I need to backup files
so I don't lose data or crash

Ivan:

Been there, done that! I was able to get my computer
running again by performing a "repair" installation. I
still cannot use windows update, but at least I am able
to recover critical files.

Boot from your XP CD. You will be asked twice if you want
to repair your installation. I was not able to make it
work the first time it asked. So I selected the option to
load XP and then there was another opportunity to attempt
a repair which worked.

Good Luck! I think we both should send Bill Gates a thank
you note.
