Been there, done that! I was able to get my computer
running again by performing a "repair" installation. I
still cannot use windows update, but at least I am able
to recover critical files.
Boot from your XP CD. You will be asked twice if you want
to repair your installation. I was not able to make it
work the first time it asked. So I selected the option to
load XP and then there was another opportunity to attempt
a repair which worked.
