You have'nt reinstalled the o/s you've repaired the origonal install
To perform a clean install ie completely new, you have to format yr disk.
You will lose ALL data
on that partition

OK..even better...I've "repaired" the original OS. But I
don't want to reformat because all I really wanted to do
is repair. But...I was reading another posting asking the
same question I'm asking and he was told that by doing
this Windows Update was incorrectly informing him that all
the updates were installed! The first posting of the
thread was on 7/6/04 at 9:234 am.

A win2k or WinXp repair will by default roll back the updates, obviously
win98 behaves differently.
Better post Q to a win98 ng
