First, NEVER disable the firewall unless you have another firewall such as a
hardware firewall already active.

As for anti virus, etc, generally I leave mine on.
However if I have a problem, I disable all unnecessary programs.
Anti virus, download accelerators, configuration issues with 3rd party
firewalls etc. are some of the main causes of Windows update errors.

If you disable important programs such as anti virus, be sure to enable them
after an update.
If you reboot, the disabled programs are usually enabled after boot.

The main reason to disable programs is to prevent errors caused by the
various programs.
Depending on how the anti virus is set up, it may slow downloads down as to
checks them for viruses.
If you are going to a site you trust such as Windows/Microsoft Update,
disable the unnecessary programs.
Just be sure to enable when you are done.

Programs should not slow downloads as long as they are not accessing the
internet,
