First, NEVER disable the firewall unless you have another firewall such as a
hardware firewall already active.
As for anti virus, etc, generally I leave mine on.
However if I have a problem, I disable all unnecessary programs.
Anti virus, download accelerators, configuration issues with 3rd party
firewalls etc. are some of the main causes of Windows update errors.
If you disable important programs such as anti virus, be sure to enable them
after an update.
If you reboot, the disabled programs are usually enabled after boot.
