Need more details. That might only be a symptom of a bad User-Agent string. In any case, "download center" is not the same thing as what I suggested: Windows Update Catlog. You should be able to download an update for any OS there... Is the update there? Oh. Is this still beta? You probably should not even be posting about that here... There is probably a special newsgroup or forum somewhere for you in that case. > > All in all, it's a tad frustrating at the moment. E.g. above CBS is mentioned. I think that often Vista users have found more details in CBS.log specifically but I don't know what the context of that would have been... FWIW here is the most helpful article I could find about that diagnostic <title>How to use Package Manager to uninstall a package in Windows Vista</title> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940410 (Live Search for "cbs.log" site:support.microsoft.com ) BTW I don't have your OS, so in case someone else has a correct version of your log(s) which would help you understand what is wrong with yours I'm cross-posting to a Vista NG. Good luck Robert Aldwinckle --- |

Thanks for the reply.
I appreciate the help. Seems as if I'm going to have to split this post into 2 parts as I'm exceeding the 30000 character post limit on this board ![]() So here goes part 1: "Robert Aldwinckle" wrote: > (cross-post added to Vista Perf & Maint) > "Are Johansen" <Are > wrote in message > news:21E94E6D-F1A5-4590-9411-... > > After uninstalling Vista sp1 RC1 ,in preparation for installing R2, windows > > update ceased working - generating the error code 80070246. > <cmd_output OS="XPsp2"> > F:\>set /a c= 0x246 > 582 > F:\>net helpmsg %c% > 582 is not a valid Windows network message number. > </cmd_ouput> > > Does Vista show a valid message for: net helpmsg 582 > > > Perhaps this? > > http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms681388.aspx > (Live Search for > 582 intitle:codes site:microsoft.com > ) > > <quote> > ERROR_ILLEGAL_CHARACTER > 582 An illegal character was encountered. The important thing for me isn't so much installing the RC2 as properly uninstalling the SP1RC1. It's after uninstalling RC1 that windows update stops working - any attempt to use WU generating error code 0x80070246. Attempting to install RC2 from a standalone package generates error code 0x80070246 Attempting to install RC1 again (from a standalone package) generates error code 0x80070246 > > The windows version I currently have listed is 6.0.6000 . Previously you said you had already uninstalled > it and it left no maintenance. Hmm, maybe I should clarify. I have uninstalled the SP1 RC1. It has left no obvious maintenance (to me at least )However, after uninstalling said package, Windows update started generating the error code 80070246. Any attempt to install ANY standalone update generates "This update does not apply to your system" Attempting to install RC2 generates code 80070246 Attempting to reinstall RC1 generates code 80070246 I tried to uninstall SP1 RC1 a little while ago as well, but that generated the same problems with windows update. I then restored the vista installation (with the SP1 RC1 already installed) through a PING 2.0 backup from my tftp server. ----snipped out the log from my earlier post---- > > > > I sincerely hope someone can help me out here. > > Thanks, > > Are > > ---snip-- > > Good luck > > Robert Aldwinckle > --- > According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228 SFC should generate a log file accessible by the following command findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt Running this command generates a 0 byte file in my case, but the cbs logs are located at that adress If I run sfc /scannow it generates an error message that is displayed in the cbs logs as [gle=0x80004005] 2008-02-12 21:31:43, Info CBS Loaded Servicing Stack v6.0.6001.18000 with Core: C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18000_non e_095f6148c74a7a64\cbscore.dll 2008-02-12 21:31:43, Info CSI 00000001@2008/2/12:20:31:43.426 WcpInitialize (wcp.dll version 0.0.0.5) called (stack @0x65a68504 @0x6a508439 @0x6a4e62a3 @0x771392 @0x771ed4 @0x7717cb) 2008-02-12 21:31:43, Info CSI 00000002@2008/2/12:20:31:43.432 WcpInitialize (wcp.dll version 0.0.0.5) called (stack @0x65a68504 @0x6a53e615 @0x6a520dec @0x771392 @0x771ed4 @0x7717cb) 2008-02-12 21:31:43, Info CSI 00000003@2008/2/12:20:31:43.432 WcpInitialize (wcp.dll version 0.0.0.5) called (stack @0x65a68504 @0x716f1a0d @0x716f1794 @0x77360b @0x772be3 @0x7717cb) 2008-02-12 21:31:43, Info CBS NonStart: Checking to ensure startup processing was not required. 2008-02-12 21:31:43, Info CSI 00000004@2008/2/12:20:31:43.992 PopulateComponentFamiliesKey - Begin 2008-02-12 21:31:48, Error CSI 00000005@2008/2/12:20:31:48.278 (F) d:\rtm\base\lstring\lblob.cpp(2217): Error STATUS_ILLEGAL_CHARACTER originated in function RtlTranscodeLBlobs expression: __rv.UcsCharacter != (0xffffffff) [gle=0x80004005] 2008-02-12 21:31:54, Info CSI 00000006@2008/2/12:20:31:54.396 PopulateComponentFamiliesKey - Begin 2008-02-12 21:31:58, Error CSI 00000007@2008/2/12:20:31:58.643 (F) d:\rtm\base\lstring\lblob.cpp(2217): Error STATUS_ILLEGAL_CHARACTER originated in function RtlTranscodeLBlobs expression: __rv.UcsCharacter != (0xffffffff) [gle=0x80004005] And this is really odd, it's loading 6001.18000 servicing stack, but any attempt I've made to install rc2 has generated an abort and the errorcode 80070246.
