Windscrapper,

First, change the way that Automatic Updates are installed.
Right click My Computer either on the Desktop or on the Start Menu and
choose Properties.
Click the Automatic Updates tab
Put a mark next to " Notify me but don't automatically download or ... "
Click Apply, then OK

The 45 failed updates for KB927978 has most likely created 45 randomly
named folders on the C:\ drive. Each one contains a log for the
attempted installation. You can delete them all.

Now open Add/Remove Programs. Is MSXML 4.0 SP2 {KB927978) listed ?
If so, uninstall it and then reboot.
Under Windows XP - Software Updates, is KB925672 listed ?
If so, uninstall it and then reboot.

If at anytime you are prompted that either of those updates are
available, UNcheck the box next to it then click OK
A window should . Check the box next to 'Do not notify me of this update
again'. Click OK.

Now download KB927978 from here and save it:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

If you've done any printing, suggest you restart the system prior to
installing the update.
Otherwise, close the browser and any other open programs.
Now install msxml4-KB927978-enu.exe
Reboot.

Did that get it installed ?

Windscrapper,

Save it to the Desktop or to wherever it's easiest for you to find it.
If you prefer, then click Start > Run > Browse, and point to
msxml4-KB927978-enu.exe
Then click Open, then OK in the Run window.
