Probably unnecessary. At least, I've never had any issues with installing all
available updates simultaneously to a new machine. YMMV.

It doesn't matter.

Certain major updates, such as service packs, new Internet Explorer versions,
and so on, should be installed separately from any other updates. (In fact I'd
recommend installing such updates manually rather than via Windows Update, and
make sure you reboot both before and after installation.)
