I have attempted to install the following windows updates KB924667, KB927779,
& KB923723. Each time it failed to install. I am using Windows XP and I
have Norton Securities 2006 Version. Can anyone suggest why I am having this
problem. Do I need these updates maybe they are not relevent. I would
appreciate any help.

Thank you.

Have you attempted to download and install these updates manually instead of
trying to do them via the Windows Update service? I've found on a number of
occasions that the update can be installed manually even though it failed
from WU.

Direct download links...

Running Wndows 2000 Pro SP4;
attempting to install Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components
2.5 Service Pack 3 (KB927779).
Normal MS Auto Updates failed with only this hotfix.

Had trouble with KB927779, when I attempted to install manually too, I got a
Product
Version Check error. I tried it in Safe Mode and normal mode.

Then I tried MDAC Utility Version Checker, too much information, main
result: UNKNOWN VERSION
I noticed a couple of components I had were newer than expected, could this
cause the problem?
Thinking about upgrading to newer version of MDAC

Same problem here with 2 W2K SP4 servers.
It seems some MDAC componements are "too high" (Version checker) :
File Current version Expected version
MSADCE.DLL 2.53.6306.0 MDAC 2.5 SP3 2.53.6200.0
MSADCO.DLL 2.53.6306.0 MDAC 2.5 SP3 2.53.6200.0
MSADCS.DLL 2.53.6306.0 MDAC 2.5 SP3 2.53.6200.0
msado15.dll 2.53.6306.0 MDAC 2.5 SP3 2.53.6200.0
MSDAPRST.DLL 2.53.6306.0 MDAC 2.5 SP3 2.53.6200.0
MSDAPS.DLL 2.53.6306.0 MDAC 2.5 SP3 2.53.6200.0
ODBC32.dll 3.525.1117.0 MDAC 2.5 SP3 3.520.6200.0
odbccp32.dll 3.525.1117.0 MDAC 2.5 SP3 3.520.6200.0
ODBCINT.dll 3.525.1117.0 MDAC 2.5 SP3 3.520.6200.0
OLEDB32.DLL 2.53.6306.0 MDAC 2.5 SP3 2.53.6200.0

Could it be possible ?
In the meantime,my solution is to block/ask for ActiveX componement to run, as
documented in KB927779 workaround...

Any other ideas ?

I suspect it's more likely the Component Checker is out-of-date. ; )

Try "Enquiring Mind"s solution?

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...312&sloc=en-us

The default DCOM settings for Authentication and Impersonation levels
must be set to at least 'Connect' and 'Identify'. After making these changes
I was able to install the Windows updates.

Good luck

Problem solved at least on one server :
Server W2K SP4 was running MDAC 2.80.
Upgrading to 2.80 SP1.
Then KB927779 installed successfully.

The other server is running MDAC 2.53 SP3. I'll try some days...

I tried to fix this upgrade problem,
by 1st attempting to upgrade to MDAC 2.8, not only did this not work, but
when it failed , it showed that all the installed files were rolled back.
Even so, damage had been done. Attempting to get a handle on this I used the
MS MDAC Utility Version Checker, it showed that I had MDAC 2.8 RTM version,
but MS Update showed that the upgrade still needed to be performed. Also,
the Utility Checker does not uninstall as it's rumored to be able to.

I found that my cpl add/remove applet no longer functioned properly, and I
got a bunch of error messages when I rebooted Safe Mode. It seems that MDAC,
ODBC , ADO and OLE are all tied in together, and that some important MS
functions are impaired if this is not functioning right, I felt necessary to
push on.

I next downloaded MDAC 2.5 , thinking that a reinstall would solve the
problem.
It did not. Error messages in the installer informed me that MDAC 2.5 was
already installed.

Googling for solutions to the add/remove malfunction, I saw that someone
suggested upgrading to MDAC 2.6. I tried this and it worked.

Yesterday [when I did all this] was a discouraging day, but now the patch
KB927779, causing the original problem is no longer needed. I wonder why MS
didn't put more install warnings and instructions on the download pages for
MDAC.
