Hi;

For the first laptop, I'd recommend you download the update and install it
offline. You can pick it up from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Note that this is the Full redistributable, so a bit larger than what MS
Update may have shown. Anyway, use that on the first laptop to install the
latest DirectX update.

For the second laptop, open RegEdit and browse down to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\HotFix\KB832483

If the item actually shows, check the right pane. I suspect the "Installed"
item has a value of something other than "1" on that system. And I suspect
that the SoftwareDistribution folder is full of items related to this
update.

Here's a first guess on getting this fixed. First, go to Add/Remove
Programs and if you see KB832483 listed there attempt to UNinstall it from
within the ARM applet. Whether that works or not, in RegEdit go back to
that section of the Registry (if it was ever there) and delete the whole
KB832483 section.

Now reboot into Safe Mode. Delete the C:Windows\SoftwareDistribution
folder. You will dump your AU/WU History, but that is no big deal. Check
your Windows folder, and if there is a sub-folder there named
"$NtUninstallKB832483$" then delete that. Empty the Recycle Bin. Rename
the C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.LOG to C:\Windows\WindowsUpdateLOG.OLD.

Now boot back into Normal Mode, open IE and go to MS update, and do a Custom
scan. Unselect all the updates offered except for KB832483 and
download/install that one. If you see any errors, check the
WindowsUpdate.LOG file (a new one will be auto-created) and post back with
the error messages in that file. If you don't see any errors, Restart the
System, go back to the MS Update site, and again do a Custom Scan. Watch
that KB832483 is no longer offered. If it is not, go ahead with the other
updates. If it IS offered again, post back with that info and list what
non-MS applications (to include AV, malware, etc.) programs you have on that
second laptop.
