I'm sorry about all of these useless, empty posts. I seem to be having
combined browser troubles and technical thinking difficulties.

What I have meant to said is this:

I am running Windows 98, from Virtual PC 7.0.1, on a PowerBook, and I have
EXACTLY the same problem. Any solutions? Anyone?

What is your objective? To make WU work or to get your updates?
You apparently can get a list of them. So you could use the list to go to
the Windows Update Catalog (e.g.) and manually download and install
each one listed. That might be simpler in the long run than trying to diagnose
whatever is happening with the WU application over your link and with
your current software configuration.

Okay, I think I've figured this one out, finally.

First: Robert, I cannot get to the lists. In 98 I get just past the point
of scanning, but cannot (succesfully) click on the links to pull up the
lists, nor the link to get to the review and install list. In XP, I don't
get past the scan.

But I believe I have figured it out. VPC has 2 options for networking:
"Virtual Switch", and so-called "Shared Networking". VPC points out,
correctly, that you are likely to have trouble if you try to use a Virtual
Switch over a wireless connection. Why, I don't know, but there it is.

It turns out that VPC, when generating a "shared network", is secretly
launching some kind of firewall software that is, as far as I can tell,
COMPLETELY undocumented. I stumbled across it because the error I recieve in
XP (0x80072EE2) has an article in the Knowledgebase, which suggests checking
firewall settings. When I checked my Mac firewall in System
Preferences->Sharing, I got a message stating that another firewall software
was running.

Well, that scared me, since I hadn't installed one, until I shutdown my VPC
Windows, and the firewall went away. On a hunch, I went and found an
ethernet port to jack into, changed my VPC to use a "Virtual Switch", and the
firewall software was NOT running anymore.

So I tried, and was able, to download all of my updates on both 98 and XP.
Except, of course, that it took FOREVER.

Quickfix: Find an ethernet port (as in, don't use wireless, and turn it
off), switch your VPC to use Virtual Switch networking, and everything should
be okay.
