You do not need to upgrade Windows in order to utilize Microsoft Exchange.
As long as you can install/use Outlook (a Microsoft Office product) and/or
if the Exchange administrators have been so kind as to give you Outlook Web
Access - then you are all set.

I can add to that even further - if the Exchange Administrators allow the
use of POP3 or IMAP - you could also use just about any other email client
you desire/like.

Or is it you want/have to join the work domain?

You shouldn't need to join the domain with your computer to access
email/access printers/access shares unless it is a very strict environment
(most are no where near that strict.)

If all you want to do is use Outlook to connect to the Exchange server - you
do not need to upgrade your Operating System. Your Windows Vista Home
Premium will run Outlook (which is what gets configured to connect to
Exchange) just fine.

So I don't know why you think you need to upgrade your operating system
(Windows Vista Home Premium) at all and/or do any sort of clean install.
