Hi

Please try the following:

Click Start >> Run >>
Type the follow command in the Open box.
"net.exe stop wuauserv" (w/o quotes)
Press Ok

Repeat the same for the following commands:

regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe msxml3.dll
net.exe start wuauserv

Restart the machine and try WU site again.

If that doesn't help:

Please check this log file for any clues or other error messages:

%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

Torgeir,

Initial the error was 0x800706F7 and so I follow the described fix. After
reboot, all the desktop icons were gone including START button or the
taskbar. Any clue as where I resolve this, TIA

Hi Jim, Kelly has a few tweaks that may assist in Win XP

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Line 117 – Restore Taskbar and Start Menu

or Line #195 "Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar"
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;318027
Taskbar Is Missing When You Log On to Windows

Which update were you installing?

I don't think that that code has anything to do with your symptom.
Probably the files in the update are more significant.
In which case the log(s) the update generated would contain clues.

BTW when you don't have a Desktop the first thing to do is
to open Task Manager e.g. press Ctrl-Alt-Delete, switch to the
Processes tab and see if explorer.exe is running (likely not).
In case it is an intermittent error you should then try restarting
explorer.exe (e.g. either via the Application tab's New Task...
button or via the File, New... menu item.)

HTH
