This is going from bad to absurd. Today when I plugged the printer
back in it went from the new device (Copy 1) to the original device.

This can, and will, happen with USB devices. Unless you keep plugging the
printer into the same port, it will be detected as a "new" printer at a
different USB port. Windows XP did the same thing. The only good news is
that once you've plugged it into every available port it will no longer show
up as "new".
