Try logging on as a guest, see what it does. It sounds like your icon cache
needs to be refreshed.
Is your hard drive full, or close to being full? I've seen computers do this
when there's no more room for
the paging file. Looking at the amount of ram you have, I'd say it should be
at least 2 gigs free, up to
around 3 gigs. Defrag it might help too.
