RE: Vista to 2003 SBS - Remote Desktop Connection Failure

According to your description, I understand that you unable to connect
external SBS thru RDP from Vista client. If I have misunderstood the
problem, please don't hesitate to let me know.

Based on my research, I suggest we try the following steps to see if we can
resolve this issue:

1. Please ensure the RDP is properly set and enabled on Vista client:

a. On the Vista client, open Control Panel, double click System

b. Click Remote settings in Task pane

c. Select "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote
Desktop (less secure)"

d. Click OK, then test this issue.

2. If the issue persists, we can take the following steps to save the
credentials on the Vista client:

a. Click Start, enter remote desktop connection in the Start Search column.
After finding it, click it.

b. Type the external SBS IP or domain name in the Computer and click
Options.

c. Under the General tab, click Save As and put the RDP file in the
Desktop. Click Connection.

d. In the Enter your credentials window, type "SBS DOMAIN NAME\USER
ACCOUNT" in the User name then enter password.

e. Check Remember my credentials. Click OK.

f. When connecting that server next time, test the issue again.

3. Do you turn on UAC on the Vista client? If yes, please perform the
following steps to see if it help:

After you turn on User Account Control in Windows Vista, programs may be
unable to access some network locations

help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Can you connect the SBS thru RDP from XP clients which in the same LAN
with the Vista?

2. Can you connect the XP client thru RDP from the Vista in same LAN?

3. Please capture screenshots on the RDP connection failure window and send
the pictures to me at v-

4. Do you get any event error on the Vista client about RDP?

5. Try to connect SBS from another Vista client, does the issue reoccur?

Hello Customer,

Thank you for your update.

1. Do you perform the step 1# in my previous reply

a. On the Vista client, open Control Panel, double click System
b. Click Remote settings in Task pane
c. Select "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote
Desktop (less secure)"

Note: Ensure you select the above option.

d. Click OK, then test this issue.

2. If the issue persists, I think the firewall on the Vista client block
TCP 3389 port. Please try to disable windows firewall on Vista and then
test this issue:

a. On the Vista client, run command "services.msc" to open Services console
b. Find "Windows Firewall" service, right click it, select Stop
c. After windows firewall service stop, test the RDP connection.

3. Do you install any 3rd-party firewall on Vista? If yes, please uninstall
it. Then, do clean boot on Vista client to narrow down this issue:

To clean boot the problematic computer, please use the steps below:
a. Click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type "MSCONFIG"
(without the quotation marks). Click OK.

b. In the System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) window, click to select
the Selective Startup button.

c. Click to clear the check mark from the "Load startup items" below
Selective Startup.

d. Click the Services tab, click to check the "Hide All Microsoft Services"
box, and remove all the check marks from the remained Non-Microsoft
Services.

e. Click OK to close the MSConfig window. Click Yes when you are asked to
restart your computer in order to enable the changes.

f. After restarting, please check whether this issue will reoccur.

g. If there are no more problems, please use the above steps to enable
services and startup items one by one in order to figure out the root cause
of this issue.

If we cannot resolve the issue after we perform the above steps, please
help me collect some information for further investigation:

1. Can you connect Vista thru RDP from itself (input Vista computer name in
the Remote Desktop Connection)?

2. Can you connect Vista thru RDP from another Vista client?

3. I do not receive your screenshot, please send it again to me working
mailbox: V-.

4. Can you connect SBS desktop thru RWW from the IE of Vista client?

Performed Step #1 and I said I did this already on my first post back to you.

Would never take that much time out of my schedule to "test" Step #2 and I
will not work without third party security software.

I already wiped the machine, threw the Vista Ultimate License in the trash
and "downgraded" to XP Table Edition 2005. I do not have time to bother with
poor product craftsmanship and greedy dollar sign driven product development.
Vista is nothing short of a profit center meets stop gap measure while
Windows 7 continues to fail even candidate level testing.

This is just another example of poor product quality from Microsoft...I
truly hope that open source systems begin to destroy this product line post
Windows 7 / Server 2008.

Thank you for your update.

I'm sorry that I did not help you to find the root cause of this issue.

Generally speaking, I think this issue is cause by improper configuration
or 3rd-party software on the Vista, because the Vista unable to RDP to XP
client in the same LAN. Additional, your issue is a individual problem, it
is not the Vista quality issue. I use Vista as my working computer since
Vista launch. I need RDP to the SBS 2003 test machine Every day. But I
never got any error about RDP.

Since you use XP instead of Vista now, we unable to continue
troubleshooting this issue, I will close this thread.
