Sloshed:
I had a similar issue after SP2. Every restart would just crash to
power off state. I tried startup repair; safe mode; I even got into
system restore once but it too had issues. Nothing worked. They all
crashed before even the point you got to.
Since my system didn't come with a Vista OS disk (just a format the
drive / reload disk), and since I had a few data items on the hard
drive that had not hit a daily backup, I decided to boot my XP CD,
install it, get my data, then run the manufacturers reload disk. To my
surprise, the first time I booted with a CD in the CD drive, it booted
up just fine, finished the updates, and I was all set. Sounds AFU, I
know, but just putting the boot able CD in the drive seemed to change
the conditions enough that it got past whatever conditions it had
created for itself - and it booted. Vista is one f'd up OS!
Might be worth a try.
