My 2 bobs worth
Have used computers from Sinclair zx81 upwards - have had all the
versions of windows except ME - don't know how I missed this one.
Brought a new machine about a month ago - dual core - 1 gig ram 320mb
hard drive - 256mb video card and Vista home premium installed.
Got it home and going loaded all available updates. On reboot 1st error -
system not communicating with the video sub system??? - reboot and seemed
to be working.Connecting Epsom printer - new - had to get updates to
work. Connect HP Printer 710c - no updates from HP - use the drivers
supplied in Vista - no go - still not going. Worked on my old Xp machine
- loaded Ubuntu on to old machine on second hard drive connected HP
printer and followed the instructions as this is the first time I've
tried Linux - no trouble.
After a fortnight a system report popped up and I have had 72 issues that
Vista can't find solutions for - ranging from incompatible software to
just stopped responding.
The system came with Microsoft works on it but the system pulls it up
everytime as it isn't digitally signed????
XP was pretty good after servicepack 2 was installed - thinking that if
things don't improve may go back to it.
I live in NZ and under the consumer protection act any goods and
services provided must operate for the use they were intended for. This
is starting to get pretty close to breaching this act - wouldn't like to
try and enforce it, but if you brought a new car and it had this many
faults you would have a water tight case. Thank the powers that be that
Microsoft don't write the software for vehicle computers.
As I said my 2 bobs worth.

Hi,

I don't think that Vista sucks, I am quite happy with it.

Hi,

You should be

The way I see it is very simple - Everyone has every right to be happy (or
upset) with his/her decision.

When peopel shared their success or failure stories, I read with interest
and sometime shared mine.

I don't knock down others just to prove my decision. A simple fact - I
don't even say any AV "sucks" like many do.

This post was a reply to Mike Hall - MVP and I don't know why it ended up
here.

Also, I joined this thread because Kevin no longer posted any political
statements and he was trying to help.

His suggestion may not be the best one like all of us including those MVP's.
But he certainly desrves to post what he sees as an alternative for the
problem, and if others can't do better, at least can keep their mouth shut.

Again, I have no problem for anyone to be happy or upset with Vista.

I know for a fact that some people cannot accept his/her decision could be
wrong, but I won't be one of them and it's their problem not mine.

I have no problem for changing my decisions based on new learning and that
happens all the time in my life.

Good luck!

Hi,

Thanks for sharing

I've said this before - I am so sure that there are many happy users, at the
same time, many are suffering with it.

I won't be so stpuid (rarely use this word) to suggest or imply how many of
each side.

The fact is very simple, there is no way we can even guess the number of
happy vs. unhappy users.

I know for a fact that some people cannot accept his/her decision could be
wrong, but I won't be one of them and it's their problem not mine.

I have no problem for changing my decisions and views based on new learning
and that happens all the time in my life.

Again, thanks for sharing and good luck

A time limited beta that requires somebody skilled to even get it close to a
desktop should NEVER be suggested as an alternative, even for Ubuntu.. :-)

Norton Anything does suck, and has for the longest time.. like AOL, once
installed, it is the devil's own job to remove it.. McAfee has followed suit
and anybody who installed the McAfee utilities of a few years ago deserves
compensation, as do users who unwittingly install all of Nero Suite..

The "things" we're discussing here are prettly much low-level applications,
so I don't think it's that much of a big deal in the first place.

And, I don't know about you but I am not that terribly want to demonstrate
every piece of knowlege that I know and leaving some rooms for others is a
good thing for me.

Maybe that's why you are wearing the hat not me.

And one more thing I want to add which has been in my mind for very long -
If you can tolerate yourself to say something "sucks", you and your fellows
should do the same when someone says the same to your beloved application.

I am using the same standard, and I hope you guys, as professionals, can at
least do the same.

I rest my case with no disrespect.

There are remedies for Vista.. none of them include Norton Anything.. there
are remedies for XP.. none of them include Norton Anything.. McAfee and Nero
have joined the ranks of Norton Anything, invasively integrating and
screwing up as they go..

In fairness to Nero Suite, it is possible to uninstall all of it and
selectively re-install the parts that are ok.. Norton and McAfee are
difficult to remove, and the process often makes the computer even worse
than when they were running.. There was a time when I was McAfee's best
supporter, but no more..

I have been running Vista since Nov 17, 2006 on hardware that was supported
well enough for it to be stable and run without major incident.. cal it luck
if you will.. many have come here for help and gone away happy.. Norton and
McAfee have not been part of the solution.. more often than not, they have
been part of the problem..

Many of us say the same thing, and have done in the XP newsgroups too..
Norton and McAfee problems are not OS specific.. they can screw up anything,
and do.. take a look at all of the posts where people have had problems with
them, in the Vista and XP groups, then ask yourself why so many of us use
the word 'suck' in the same sentence..

We don't use the word lightly.. we are here to help, not hinder, and I am
not talking just about MVPs.. others make the same claim..

Can't say I have ever had trouble removing Norton from my computers, which
often have been purchased
with that crap pre-installed.
Then again, I have always removed Norton first thing with my new
computers......

Mike, what is your opinion of Zone Alarm Suite ?
